Green Weeds
The lazy days of summer are drawing to a close and what a summer it has been!
Scorching sunshine and no rain has led to a dry, parched and arid landscape everywhere you turn. Droughts being declared, hosepipe bans put in place and the drying up of rivers and lakes such has never been seen before. Summer is usually the season of resplendent foliage, verdant vistas and lush landscapes. However, this summer has been the summer of rabid rays, hellish heat and a scorching sun.
When looking at swathes of dry, brown, prickly stubble of what used to be grass, are patches of green dotted here and there. Upon closer inspection, you realise that the only patches of green are where there are clumps of weeds.
I found it interesting to note that I didn’t have to mow the grass in my garden this summer, but I had to do the weeding. Why? Weeds will spring up in the garden regardless of the conditions: hot and humid or cold and crisp.
As l looked around, I thought as it is in nature’s garden, so it is in the garden of life. The negative things in your life will spring up oh so easily without any help from you. Negativity such as envy, bitterness, anger, jealousy, impatience, hatred, indifference and the list goes on. Whereas, to create an ambient atmosphere and a lush landscape, you will have to tend, water, nurture and cultivate your land. You will have to plant things such as love (of God and yourself), peace, joy, patience, self-control amongst others. Philippians 4:8 encourages us to ‘meditate on these things’: ‘Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.’
Should you want your life to look lush and green, then think about what is growing in your life. Be careful to tend otherwise you may have to mend.
Until next time.
